WFLA is reporting local residents have inquired after hearing a loud boom this afternoon.

At this time, the cause of the boom is not known, however, The Lakeland Police Department has acknowledged the legitimacy of the concerns, and is currently investigating.

The noise could be heard by people in Polk, Pasco, and Hillsborough counties, in addition to parts of Hernando County. The boom was first reported around 2 pm.

It was so strong that some local residents reported their homes actually shook during the ordeal.
