ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA - AUGUST 18: Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army General Mark Milley participates in a news briefing at the Pentagon August 18, 2021 in Arlington, Virginia. U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and General Milley held a news briefing to discuss the current situation in Afghanistan after the Taliban took control of the country.

General Mark Milley is under fire and facing calls for resignation for comments he made to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Schnitt reads a transcript of a phone call between Milley and Pelosi where Milley states: “Madame Speaker, I agree with you on everything.” This phone call took place after the January 6th riots in the capital, to which Nancy Pelosi’s biggest concern was America’s nuclear arsenal. After this call, Milley decided he had to act. Rounding up his top service chiefs in a room and calling the director of the National Security Agency, even the CIA Director, and aggressively watch everything.

In a book co-written by Bob Woodward and Bob Costa, General Mark Milley was responsible for mobilizing America’s National Security State. This was without the knowledge of the American people or even the rest of the world. Schnitt wonders if Milley was overstepping or if he even had the right to do this. Woodward and Costa, in their book, claim that some people would believe this to be true. However, Milley believes his actions were to assure that there was no accidental use of American Armed Forces or weapons against allies or enemies. Schnitt really doesn’t think that Trump, even in desperation, would ever consider that.
