Investor’s Edge with Gary Kaltbaum

NEW YORK CITY - JANUARY 12: People shop for groceries in a Manhattan store on January 12, 2022 in New York City. Newly released data shows that inflation grew at its fastest 12-month pace in nearly 40 years during the month of December. It showed a 7% jump from a year earlier, as prices rose on everything from gas to furniture for American shoppers.

Pandemic prices are not going away anytime soon as inflation measures hit a record high. U.S. Producer Price Index tracks what producers get paid for their goods rose to over 9.7% last year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this is the most significant increase since 2010. Taking away food, energy, and trade services prices, the inflation index rose 6.9% last year, compared with a modest 1.3% increase in 2020.

In December alone, the PPI data followed a similar pattern as the consumer price index that came out Tuesday: Prices still rose in December but at a much slower pace than in the previous months. More than half of the price increases for services came from higher prices for trade services. Inflation is now hitting more and more Americans throughout the country. Store shelves are barren, and vitamins and drugs are scarce. With the price increase, we lose control over the situation at a skyrocketing rate.
Many experts warn that if no control is taken soon, we may see irreversible damages like the country hasn’t seen since the last depression.
